Groton Man Accused of Stabbing in New London

On 09/11/2024 at approximately 1:14 PM, Troopers assigned to Troop E in Montville responded to the area of Williams Street, underneath the Gold Star Bridge, in New London for a reported stabbing. This area is considered state property.


Prior to Troopers' arrival, New London Police Officers responded to the scene to assist and located an adult male victim who had sustained multiple stab wounds. The adult male victim was transported to an area hospital for his injuries. Detectives with the State Police Eastern District Major Crime (EDMC) squad responded to the scene and assumed this investigation.

 

Further into the investigation, Detectives identified the suspect as Richard Nieves, DOB 06/11/1969, of Groton. Detectives later located Nieves at a residence in Groton City, where he confessed to the stabbing and explained the conflict was over personal property. Nieves was arrested on site and transported to Troop E where he was processed and charged with the following violations:

 

C.G.S. 53a-60, Assault 2nd Degree

C.G.S. 53a-181, Breach of Peace 2nd Degree

 

Nieves was held on a $50,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at New London Superior Court on 09/12/2024.

 

After medical evaluation, it was determined that injuries sustained by the victim were non-life threatening.


There is no ongoing threat to the public.
