Naugatuck Man Stopped for Reckless Driving on I-84 in Southington, Leads to DUI Arrest

On 10/03/2024 at approximately 10:00 PM, a Trooper assigned to Troop H in Hartford was conducting proactive speed enforcement when they observed a gray Toyota Corolla traveling at a high rate of speed on I-84 Westbound in the area of exit 32 in Southington. Utilizing their department issued laser, the Trooper clocked the Toyota's speed at 113 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. The Trooper engaged their emergency lights and siren to effect a traffic stop, and the operator of the Toyota complied by pulling over to the right shoulder.

Once stopped, the Trooper approached the Toyota and located a male occupant sitting in the driver's seat, who was identified as Avila Carvalho De (DOB 04/23/2005), of Naugatuck. When the Trooper asked Carvalho if he knew how fast he had been driving, Carvalho did not respond. The Trooper asked Carvalho which area he was driving from and Carvalho told the Trooper he was coming from Brazil. During their conversation, the Trooper immediately determined that Carvalho was exhibiting signs of impairment.

Based on the Trooper's observations, Carvalho was asked to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, to which he agreed to participate. As a result, Carvalho did not perform the tests to standard. Carvalho was ultimately arrested and transported to Troop H for processing where he was charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 14-222; Reckless Driving

C.G.S. 14-227a; Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs

Carvalho was later released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment at New Britain Superior Court on 10/29/2024.
