The Connecticut State Police assures residents and visitors CT State Troopers will be out working during the potential snowfall Wednesday into Thursday, patrolling highways and roads. Drivers are encouraged to avoid driving, if possible, during the forecasted snow, but we know that is not always feasible. Therefore, we’d like to share a few safety reminders:
Before you leave your home, please check the latest forecast and road conditions.
Ensure that your vehicle’s windshield wipers are working properly and you have enough gas for you trip(s).
Contact a family member and/or friend and let them know the route you plan to take to your destination.
Bring a fully-charged cell phone on your journey.
Clear your vehicle of any snow and ice before shifting into “drive”.
While driving, please keep headlights on at all times so that your vehicle is visible to other drivers.
Be sure to leave enough space between your vehicle and the vehicle traveling ahead of you to allow proper reaction time, especially during icy/wet roadway conditions.
Reduce speed on snow-covered roads and use turn signals.
On all roads, allow snowplows the space they need to clear snow from travel lanes. If your vehicle becomes stuck or disabled, please remain inside it for safety and call 911.
If you have a vehicle disabled on any highway/roadway, make arrangements to have your vehicle removed to ensure proper snow clearance by the Department of Transportation. Failure to do so may result in your vehicle being towed.
Remember, when you see emergency vehicles, tow trucks, maintenance vehicles on the side of the road with flashing lights, or disabled vehicles, it's your responsibility to move over to the next lane if possible, or slow down to a safe speed. This law helps protect workers and first responders and reduces the risk of accidents.
We hope you won’t have to call us, but rest assured, we will assist all motorists who may be stuck on the roads or involved in motor vehicle accidents.
Please drive safe at all times!
