Two Reckless Operators Face Multiple Charges After Speeding, Eluding Trooper on Route 9 in Newington

On 09/04/2024, at approximately 7:20 a.m., a Trooper assigned to Troop H in Hartford was traveling in the right lane of Route 9 southbound in the area of the Exit 39 off-ramp in Newington. The Trooper observed two vehicles traveling southbound, approaching his location, at a high rate of speed. Additionally, the Trooper observed that both vehicles were cutting in and out of traffic and appeared to be racing each other. After the vehicles passed his location, the Trooper accelerated, caught up to and obtained license plate information for both.

One of the vehicles was a black Acura RSX, and the second vehicle was a blue Audi S5.

The Audi continued to accelerate reaching speeds exceeding 110 MPH in a posted 65 MPH zone. The Audi continued to drive in an aggressive manner cutting in and out of traffic, posing a risk to other motorists during morning rush hour.

The Trooper determined that the Acura was traveling at speeds between 90-110 MPH. Upon approaching a safe location, the Trooper activated their cruiser’s emergency lights and siren in an effort to stop the vehicles.

In response, the Acura continued to weave in and out of traffic and rapidly accelerated. Based upon these observations, the Trooper determined that drivers of the accused vehicles did not intend to stop. In the interest of the safety of morning commuters, the Trooper terminated efforts to stop the vehicles and exited the highway at Exit 37 in New Britain. A second Trooper, located in the area of the Exit 27 off-ramp, observed the Acura continuing to operate in a reckless manner.

Troopers determined that the Acura was registered to an individual residing in East Hartford. The Audi was found to be registered to an individual residing in New Britain.

Troopers traveled to the New Britain residence and met with the registered owner of the Audi, who explained that an individual, identified as Ainsworth Salmon, DOB 09/04/1993, of Bloomfield, had borrowed their vehicle. The owner of the Audi then contacted Salmon, who agreed to turn himself in at Troop H.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. Salmon arrived at Troop H, where he was taken into custody and charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 53a-63, Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree

C.G.S. 14-222*, Reckless Driving

C.G.S. 14-232(a)(1), Improper Passing

C.G.S. 14-223a, Disobeying the Signal of an Officer

While speaking with Troopers, Salmon explained that he did not know the driver of the Acura.

Salmon was released on a $1,500 non-surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at New Britain Superior Court, on 10/04/2024.

Following the arrest of Salmon, Troopers traveled to the residence in East Hartford to speak with the registered owner of the Acura, who explained that the Acura was currently being used by an individual identified as Aryana Pereira, DOB 09/23/2003, of East Hartford. The owner of the Acura then contacted Pereira, who agreed to speak with Troopers at the residence. During interactions with Pereira, it was determined that she held a valid learner’s permit only and was not accompanied by a licensed driver at the time of the alleged incident. According to Pereira, she was unaware that she was the intended subject of the Trooper’s attempted motor vehicle stop.

Based upon the observations made and information obtained during this investigation, Pereira was taken into custody and transported to Troop H, where she was processed and charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 53a-64, Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree

C.G.S. 14-222*, Reckless Driving

C.G.S. 14-232(a)(1), Improper Passing

C.G.S. 14-223a, Disobeying the Signal of an Officer

C.G.S. 14-36a, Operating Without a License

Pereira was released on a $1,500 non-surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at New Britain Superior Court, on 10/04/2024.
