Vehicle Clocked at 110 MPH Boxed-In on I-84 in Willington

On 09/10/2024, at approximately 3:18 p.m., a Trooper assigned to Troop C in Tolland was conducting proactive highway speed enforcement and observed a white GMC SUV displaying Pennsylvania registration traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of I-84 westbound, passing Exit 73 in Union.

Using a laser unit, the Trooper determined that the GMC was traveling at approximately 94 MPH in an area with a posted 65 MPH speed limit. The Trooper then caught up to the GMC and initiated a motor vehicle stop. In response, the operator of the GMC failed to stop and accelerated to speeds of approximately 110 MPH. In the interest of public safety, the Trooper terminated efforts to stop the GMC, which continued traveling westbound on I-84, where several additional State Troopers were positioned in the area of Exit 69. Working together, the Troopers were able to box the vehicle in, and bring it to a stop safely. The accused operator, positively identified as Gagan Khandate, DOB 08/01/1993, of New York, NY, was taken into custody without further incident and the GMC was towed from the scene. Khandate was transported to Troop C, where he was processed and charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 14-222, Reckless Driving

C.G.S. 14-223a, Disobeying the Signal of an Officer

Khandate was later released on a $1,000 surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Rockville Superior Court, on 09/24/2024.
